How To Lead A Messianic Family Shabbat (Shabbat Siddur)

ShabbatIf your seeking to start observing biblical festivals a good place to start is by observing a Family Shabbat which is done on Friday evening before Sunset. This is done because once the sun goes down your are to Rest (Shabbat), the Rest (Shabbat) was made for the man, not the man for the Sabaath. The Sabaath or Shabbat is for Rest. Here is a Siddur (Order-Structure):

The Shabbat starts of with the Giving Tzedakah (Charity), usually you will have a Tzedakah box in which you and your children put money in and then recite the following prayer.

Baruch atah Adonay Eloheinu Melech ha-olam, asher kidshanu bemitzvotav vetzevanu al ha-tzedakah

Blessed are you, O L-rd our G-d, King of the Universe, who has sanctified us by His commandments and has commanded us concerning the Tzedakah

The next part is the Candle Lighting, this is the part the wife does. The women is the bringer of the light, the one who brings the light into the world which is a picture of Mariam bringing Yeshua into the world. Upon lighting the candle the women waves her hands three times toward herself and then recites this prayer.

Baruch atah Adonay Eloheinu Melech ha-olam, asher kidshanu bemitzvotav vetzevanu or goyim v’natan-lanu et Yeshua Meschicheinu or ha-olam. Amayn.

Blessed are you, O L-rd our G-d, King of the Universe, who has sanctified us by His commandments and has commanded us to be a light to the nations and Who gave to us Yeshua the Messiah, the Light of the World. Amen.

Next you pray for your sons and daughters. The prayers goes as follows.

(Blessing Over Sons)

Y’simchah Elochim ke’Ephrieim v’chiMenasheh.

G-d make you as Ephraim and Mannaseh.

(Blessing Over Daughters)

Y’simaech Elocheem k’Sarah Rivkah Rechael v’Lea-ah.

G-d make you as Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, and Leah.

A very popular song usually song on Shabbat is Shalom Aleichem, which is as follows:

Shalom aleichem, malachei ha’sharayt, malachei elyon, mi’melech malchei ha’mlachim, HaKadosh Baruch Hoo:
Bo’achem l’shalom, malachei ha’shalom, malachei elyon, mi’melech malchei ha’mlachim, HaKadosh Baruch Hoo:
Barchunee l’shalom, malachei ha’shalom, malachei elyon, mi’melech malchei ha’mlachim, HaKadosh Baruch Hoo:
Tzaytchem l’shalom, malachei ha’shalom, malachei elyon, mi’melech malchei ha’mlachim, HaKadosh Baruch Hoo:

Peace be unto you, ministering angels, messengers of the Most High, the King of kings, the Holy One, Blessed be He.
May your coming be in peace, messengers of peace, messengers of the Most High, the King of kings, the Holy One, Blessed be He.
Bless me with peace, messengers of peace, messengers of the Most High, the King of kings, the Holy One, Blessed be He.
May your departure be in peace, messengers of peace, messengers of the Most High, the King of kings, the Holy One, Blessed be He.

Following that is the Blessing Over Wife (Ayshet Cha-Yil) in which Proverbs 31 can be recited or prayed over the wife. The prayer is as follows:

An accomplished woman, who can find? Her value is far beyond pearls.
Her husband’s heart relies on her and he shall lack no fortune.
She does him good and not evil, all the days of her life.
She seeks wool and flax, and works with her hands willingly.
She is like the merchant ships, she brings her bread from afar.
She arises while it is still night, and gives food to her household and a portion to her maidservants.
She plans for a field, and buys it. With the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard.
She girds her loins in strength, and makes her arms strong.
She knows that her merchandise is good. Her candle does not go out at night.
She sets her hands to the distaff, and holds the spindle in her hands.
She extends her hands to the poor, and reaches out her hand to the needy.
She fears not for her household because of snow, because her whole household is warmly dressed.
She makes covers for herself, her clothing is fine linen and purple.
Her husband is known at the gates, when he sits among the elders of the land.
She makes a cloak and sells it, and she delivers aprons to the merchant.
Strength and honor are her clothing, she smiles at the future.
She opens her mouth in wisdom, and the lesson of kindness is on her tongue.
She watches over the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rise and praise her, her husband lauds her.
Many women have done worthily, but you surpass them all.
Charm is deceptive and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears God shall be praised.
Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates.

Following is the blessing for the Shabbat, the short version goes as follows:

Baruch atah Adonay Eleoheinu Melech ha-olam, asher bidvaro ma’areev ‘araveem. Amayn.

Blessed art Thou, L-rd our G-d, King of the universe, Who at the Word brings on the evenings.

The long version is as follows:

Vay’hi erev vay’hi voker yom hashishi
vay’khulu hashamayim v’ha’aretz v’khol tz’va’am
vay’khal elohim bayom hash’vi’i m’la’kh’to asher asah

Vay’varekh Elohim et yom hash’vi’i vay’kadeish oto
ki vo shavat mikol m’la’kh’to asher bara Elohim la’asot

And there was evening and there was morning, a sixth day
The heavens and the earth were finished, the whole host of them
And on the seventh day God completed his work that he had done
and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done
And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it
because in it he had rested from all his work that God had created to do

Barukh atah Adonai, Eloheinu, melekh ha-olam
asher kid’shanu b’mitz’votav v’ratzah vanu
v’shabat kad’sho b’ahavah uv’ratzon hin’chilanu zikaron l’ma’aseih v’rei’shit
ki hu yom t’chilah l’mik’ra’ei kodesh zeikher litzi’at Mitz’rayim
ki vanu vachar’ta v’otanu kidash’ta mikol ha’amim
v’shabat kad’sh’kha b’ahavah uv’ratzon hin’chal’tanu

Blessed are You, Lord, our God, King of the Universe
who sanctifies us with his commandments, and has been pleased with us
You have lovingly and willingly given us Your holy Shabbat as an inheritance, in memory of creation
because it is the first day of our holy assemblies, in memory of the exodus from Egypt
because You have chosen us and made us holy from all peoples
and have willingly and lovingly given us Your holy Shabbat for an inheritance

Barukh atah Adonai m’kadeish hashabat (Amein).

Blessed are You, who sanctifies Shabbat (Amen)

Next up is the Kiddush or the Blessing over the wine, this is the part of the service that the Catholic Church arbitrarily took out of the Jewish Erev Shabbat and turn into the Eucharist. If you read the history of the Catholic Church and how they created their Liturgy they clearly state they took some of the elements of the Erev Shabbat and turned it into the Eucharist, they also claim to had changed the Sabbath (that anyone who worships on Sunday honors the pope over scripture) and they also took Passover and turned it to Easter. This is the original form of what is commonly called communion. The prayer over the wine is as follows:

Baruch atah Adonay Eloheinu Melech ha-olam, borey p’ree ha-gaphen. Amayn.

Blessed are thou, O L-rd our G-d, King of the Universe, who creates the fruit of the vine. Amen.

The next element is the washing of hands, which G-d commanded as ceremonial way before people believed their where health benefits to opening G-ds commands. At this point a bowl of water and a towel is needed. It is most likely at this point in the Passover Seder that Yeshua washed the disciples feet. The water would either poured over the hands or the fingers would be dipped in the water and you wash your hands up to your wrist. The prayer that is said is as follows:

Baruch attah Adonai eloheinu melekh ha-olam asher kiddeshanu bemitvotav vetzivanu al netilat yadayim

Blessed are you, O L-rd our G-d, King of the Universe, who has sanctified us by His commandments and has commanded us about washing the hands

Following the washing of the hands it the blessing of the Bread. Its important to note that much like the bread of presence in the Tabernacle these where loaves of leavened bread. Only during the Feast of Unleavened Bread would it be a Matza or Unleavened Bread. Sometimes Matza is used when one is impoverished and doesn’t have the means to purchased leavened bread. This is another element that was distorted. Passover falls during the Feast of Unleavened Bread so Matza is used. There is no other time that Unleavened Bread is required or used by in large. The Catholic Church distorted this in favor of their pagan influenced trans-substantiation ritual. The prayer for bread (ha’Motzi) is as follows:

Baruch atah Adonay Eleoheinu Melech ha-olam, ha-motzi l’chem min ha’eretz. Amayn.

Blessed are thou, O L-rd our G-d, King of the Universe, who brings forth bread from the earth. Amen.

As Gentile or Messianic believers in Yeshua we add the Blessing of Messiah. Which goes as follows:

(Everyone) Baruch atah Adonay Eloheinu Melech ha-olam, asher na-tan lano et deh-rech ha-ya-shoo-ah b’Meh-shee-ach Yah’shua.

(Everyone) Blessed are You, O L-rd our G-d, King of the Universe, who has given us the way of salvation in Messiah Yeshua.

One of the most central prayers in Judiasm is the Shema it is said at all prayer times, three times a day, when you go to bed and when you wake up. The prayer goes as follows:

(Everyone) Shema Yisrael, Adonay Eloheinu, Adonay echad. Baruch shem ke-vod mal-choo-too lay-olam vaed. Yah’shua, ha-Ma-she-ach, hoo Adonay.

(Everyone) Hear O Israel, the L-rd our G-d, the L-rd is One. Blessed be His name, whose glorious kingdom is forever and ever. Yeshua The Messiah, He is the L-rd.

As Gentile or Messianic believers in Yeshua we add the Fathers Prayer which is also know as the Lords Prayer. Yeshua’s teaching on prayer was based upon the Amidah (Standing Prayer), that’s why He says “When you stand praying.” The prayer goes as follows:

Avinu shebashamayim, yitkadesh shimkha. Ki lekha ha-mamlakha vehagevurah veha-tiferet l’olemei olamim. Amen.

Our Father who is in heaven Sanctified be Your Name May your kingdom come, may Your will be done, As it is in heaven, so be it on earth, Give to us this day, our daily portion of the Bread, And forgive us our debts, As we are forgiving to those who are indebted to us, And do not lead us into the hands of temptation but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the Kingdom, and the Power, and the Beauty forever into the ages, Amen

As in most settings they are ended by the Rabbi, Leader or Father (Priest) singing the Aaronic Benediction of their family or congregation. This is a central prayer to Judiasm and Messianic Judiams. The prayer goes as follows:

Ya-ve-recha Adonay ve-yeesh-me-recha. Ya-er Adonay panav e-ley-cha vee-choo-ne-cha Yeesa Adonay panav e-lay-cha v’yasem l’cha Shalom. B’Shem Yah’shua ha-Ma-she-ach sar ha-shalom, shalom.

May the L-rd bless you and keep you. The L-rd make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you; may the L-rd lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace. In the name of Yeshua the Messiah, the Prince of Peace, Shalom.

The next blessing is the blessing over the meal. The prayer is as follows:

Baruch atah Adonay Eleoheinu Melech ha-olam, borae meenay mazonot. Amayn.

Blessed are thou, O L-rd our G-d, King of the Universe, Creator of all kinds of foods. Amen.

At this time you would eat the meal that has been prepared before sunset on the Sabaath. Following the meal you would have readings from the scripture, Midrash or discussion and singing of Psalms. In Jewish tradition grace or thanks is given after meals, once you’ve enjoyed the blessings of G-d you say or give thanks.

The short prayer for eating a variety of foods in one sitting is Boreh Nefashot which is as follows:

Baruch atah Adonay Eleoheinu Melech ha-olam, borei n’fashot rabot v’chesronan al kol ma she’barata l’hachayot bahem nefesh kol chai baruch chei ha’olamim.

Blessed are You, L-rd our G-d, King of the universe, Creator of numerous living beings and their needs, for all the things You have created with which to sustain the soul of every living being. Blessed is He who is the Life of the worlds.

The full After the meal the blessings would go as follows. The first prayer is the “Grace After Meals” which is as follows:

Barukh attah Adonai eloheynu melekh ha’olamhazan et ha’olam kullo betuvo, bechen bechesed uvrachamim. Hu notein lechem lekholbasar ki le’olam chasdo.Uvtuvo haggadol tamid lo chaseid lanu ve’al yechsar lanu mazon le’olam va’ed,ba’avur shemo haggadol. Ki hu El zan umfarneis lakhol, umeitiv lakol umeikhin mazon lekhol b’riyotav, asher bara.Barukh attah hazan et hakkol. Amein.

Blessed are you, L-RD our G-d, King of the universe, Who nourishes the whole world in goodness, with grace, kindness, and compassion. He gives bread to all flesh, for His mercy endures forever. And through His great goodness we have never lacked, nor will we lack food forever, for the sake of His great Name. For He is G-d, who nourishes and sustains all, and does good to all, and prepares food for all His creatures which He created. Blessed are You, L-RD, who nourishes all. Amen.

And that is the basic Shabbat Siddur (Order-Structure) for begginners. I hope this finds you blessed and you find this helpful.
