My Personal List of Favorite Free BB Apps![]()
Here is a list of apps that I find useful and use frequently. I thought I would share what I find useful. Hopefully my experience can help others enjoy some of the apps that make my life easier and that I find very useful. iPhone are for music consumers who like to us Apple iTunes, whereas Blackberry is for Musicians, Industry Professionals, Writers and Artists who write and like the connectivity of BB Messenger. Here are some of the things that I find useful as an Artist and Writer.
UberTwitter (works on WiFi only) an excellent twitter client for promotional or personal use. Its easy functions well even on WiFi only. I prefer this over other Twitter clients I enjoy the functionality, look, speed and that the creator updates it often.
WordPress (works on WiFi only) is the best app for my favorite blog platform which allows you to write posts, manage your blogs, view your upload photos and videos, edit pages, and manage comments. Its a fully functional and very capable app for your blackberry. WordPress is my favorite blog site and I love this app. It give me all the functionality I need to post, update and edit blog posts. Its also got a really good statistics viewer and comments management functionality.
Olivetree Bible Reader (works on WiFi only) is my favorite Bible app which features a host of free bible, devotions, textual notes, cross-references, Strong’s numbers and books. I love this bible it comes available with Free Bibles, Books, Devotionals and Bible Reading Plans. Olivetree Bible Reader features Verse Chooser, Bookmarks, Full Screen Text, Bible’s with Strong’s, Greek/Hebrew, Commentaries, Integrated Book Store, Offline Access, Custom Fonts/Colors, Advanced Search, Versified Commentaries, Split-Screen Reading, Hyperlinked Notes & Personal Notes. You can also purchase other bible which I have done. I’ve purchased the Complete Jewish Bible and KJV with Strong’s, among a few others. I love this application and use it weekly at Congregation.
YouVersion Bible (works on WiFi only) is a good social media friendly bible that allows you to easily post bible verse to Twitter. YouVersion features over 41 Translations, Reading Plans, Quick Search, and Easy Navigation. If you like to post a verse for the day this is an app that is great for you to find the verse you like and post it to Twitter.
Mobi-Pocket Reader is great for all you eBook and eNews readers, it also has a handy Mobipocket Reader eBook Desktop Creator which allows you to convert you DOC and PDF files into the right format so that you can experience an enjoy them right on your device. You can customize your reading experience, font style, color, size, margins, line spacing, justification, background color, full screen mode, simple navigation with shortcut keys, bookmarks, annotations, and highlights. Choose between hundreds of reference dictionaries from world renowned publishers in the eBook store This is an excellent tool that I’ve received many miles from and had an enjoyable reader experience. I have a lot of eBook and PDF’s that I read through in my MBP Library
VIIGO RSS Reader (works on WiFi only if you select Wifi) this is my personal favorite blog and podcast reader app, plus its got other cool features like weather updates, shopping, sports, entertainment, flights, travel, politics, local interest, job and Craigslist search functions and stock market watch functionality. I love this app, this is where I have all the blogs and website RSS feeds that I follow in. It’s a wonderful app that gives you access to all the blogs and websites that you want to stay up to date with the latest content. This is my new portal. I’m not so much into watching propaganda based news like Fox & Friends or others like MSNBC. I prefer to find more independent sources. Plus I can follow my favorite artist, or other writers who I like to stay up with from Hip Hop to Hebraic Roots of Christianity.
Facebook is for all my fellow TwitFace (Twitter-Facebook) friends and family. It has a dope address book sync function. Its more of a view and respond app, it doesn’t allow you to edit content, which is one of the draw back it doesn’t have full access to complete Facebook functionality. You can connect with your friends while on the go, share updates, get messages as they arrive, view friends status updates and photos, see where your friends have checked in and even update your own location. Yet its good to stay up to date and connected.
Paypal is wonderful for those who make and take payments with Paypeezy. Its functionality is limited to basic but helpful nonetheless. You can use it to send money to friends and family, anytime and anywhere in the world. It claims to be secure and fast. I use this to pay bills, to receive payments for Freelance work, donations and even in difficult times family has been able to send money and vice verse I’ve been able to send money. Though its basic it is and can be useful.
Google Maps (works on WiFi only) is better than the Blackberry maps. Using your voice and location to do search. The hands free functionality makes driving and finding directions easier. Though I’d have to say Mapquest app does seem to give better and faster directions. Google does have some cool things like street level view, that can help you see what things look like on the ground and satellite view that can give you a better lay of the land that just a simple map without the geography.
MapQuest 4 Mobile is a good app that I prefer its directions over Google maps, they seem to give more accurate and quicker route directions. I like it considerably more. MQ4 Mobile features 2D Maps, Aerial Maps, Directions, Traffic Congestion and Incidents updates, Find Me (location finder for those who get lost easy or got off track), free form local search, business search and saved searches including My Places.
LinkedIN (works on WiFi only) is an excellent social networking address book, resume and professional contact hub. You can find out about any of your new contacts, stay up to date with their latest updates and build a professional network.
Opera Mini (works on WiFi only) is a good internet alternative to the native browser which is useful if your data plan isn’t unlimited and has limited bandwidth. Opera Mini also removes the limited download file size of the native BB browser which is helpful in downloading larger files. Opera Mini renders complete web pages, switch between open windows with tabs, with the ability to switch between portrait and landscape and speed dial launch your favorite pages. Opera Mini is able to save money you spend on data usage because it compresses web pages up to 90% using a tenth less than other browsers. Opera Turbo compresses pages up to 80%. Opera Mini also helps you manage your downloads easier.
Bolt Browser (works on WiFi only) which is much like Opera Mini in that it allows you to surf the web without incurring additional fee’s from your data plan. In much the same way as Opera Mini, Bolt allows you to download larger files as well. Bolt Browser allows you to view streaming flash and videos, as well as enjoy Twitter and Facebook widgets, even back up your favorites in the cloud, offers full desktop style browsing, run web-based applications, web content is seen as is without changes and browse any site with quality rendering.
Best New Additions to BB OS
File Viewer is awesome because you can directly view all the files, folders, change file names and delete content. This eases file management. Its one of the things that makes BB better that iPh-reck-one plus the full qwerty keyboard is wonderful for writers and musicians.
Google & Yahoo Address Book Sync is an awesome new feature to automatically back up you phone address book. The new BB OS offers wireless contact synchronization.
Manage Connections: WiFi Connectivity is lovely since you can set WiFi preferred and in most of the apps I use you can set them to work on WiFi only.
PDF View you can view PDF’s in emails by clicking on them. BB still doesn’t have a native PDF View app. If you want to view PDF’s you have to email them to yourself and open them to view them.
Useful Essential BB Core Apps
BB Maps (works on WiFi only, but only while connected to a Wifi network) does have a handy arrow that shows you where you are on the directions map which is handy. I prefer the use Google or Mapquest personally. The new BB Map allows you to display various layers of information
Appworld is the best place to find any app that works for you including most of what I listed. It doesn’t work without a data plan.
Docs To Go is your Word, PowerPoint and Excel connectivity app. In the basic version you can edit existing files if you upgrade you can create Docs. The new update makes it possible to see animations and transitions in PowerPoint presentations. BB OS now comes with Documents To Go already installed without having to download and install the update separately.
Gears Support is now offered and supports the following Gears API components Factory, Blob, Database, Desktop, Geolocation, HttpRequest, LocalServer, Timer and WorkerPpol.
Media Player is for all you music lovers. I love the expandable MicoSD card which I have loaded with 3,000 songs right now on my 8 GB you can go up to 16 GB or 32 GB depending. I also like the built in equalizer presets that allow you to increase or decrease bass and tremble to optimize the player for your music tastes whether Hip Hop, Rock, Classic or any of the other presets. There are some new features such as songs shown in shuffled order, removal of samples songs, and also the ability to View the Next/Prev picture using the Trackball.
MemoPad is oft used for my rough drafts before posting to WordPress or elsewhere. I do a lot of writing rough drafts and thoughts here before loading them into Windows Live Writer or WordPress for Blackberry.
Holding The Menu Key will allow you to switch between applications.
This is my run down of useful third party apps, helpful new features in the Blackberry OS and useful core apps. I hope you find this helpful. Please feel free to comment with your own suggestions, favorite features and updates.
