Thanks to the advent of Twitter, Facebook and Google this revolution got a second wind that brought them a win. In some ways this uprising at Tahrir Square was reminiscent of the Tian’anmen Square Revolt in China. Both were popular uprising yet in China the state shut down communication and extinguished the revolt. The Egyptian president seemed to be following the Chinese playbook. However when we thought it was over there was an outcry through media using Facebook and Twitter the people spoke and the revolution got a second wind. When the news of what was happening got out the world joined in solidarity with the Egyptian people. When President Hosni Mubarak gave them a puppet Vice President Suleiman much like Putin did in Russia the people continued to push for his resignation. When Mubarak picked Suleiman, the CIA’s man in Egypt, who was said to be a friend to the US and known torturer who has long been courted as a presidential successor. This didn’t signal the sure and certain end the Egyptian people were looking for. After 300 deaths, days of protest and secret torture the people won. The Supreme Military Council stepped in to take over until there is a successful election. Much like the American Revolution they are standing up for a popular constitution, elected officials, reform and voice for the people. The people have successfully stood against oppression and pushed for change. This brings a changing cross winded at the cross roads of the middle east.
Egypt has been a major partner in America’s middle east policy. Is it going to continue to support the war on terror? Will the continue to support Israel? How does the stain of secret torture and involvement in the CIA’s Rendition program affect the future of Egypt? This current revolt which started between the Muslim Brotherhood seeking control with attacks on Coptic Churches and ended with Christians protecting Muslim protesters during their time of prayer. How is this going to change this? What will the new Egypt look like? I pray that the tourist open up to site Mubarak had closed off. I pray that ancient sites that the Mubarak regime shut off from academics, archaeologist and researchers be opened up so that we can continue to research and learn from the resources available. We will see how this unfold. It has seen a good beginning. Let’s continue to pray for peace in the middle East, for peace in Israel. Let’s continue to pray for Egypt, Sudan, Myanmar and other places of current and recent turmoil and uprising.
