Gaddafi Has To Go Or Libyan Rebels Will Not Negotiate

With all the turmoil in the Middle East there has been a lot of attention there in recent months. It seems the populace has grown tired from the war on terror, and become worn out from intrusions from the west and incursions with Al Qaeda terrorists. A genuine desire from the people of the Middle East to find peaceful and democratic solutions has arisen. Yes, they have taken an attitude like the American Revolution at times “Give me liberty or give me death.”

In Libya the rebels have had to fight literally to death to be heard. In many cases Middle Eastern governments have caved to domestic and international pressure with minimal casualties. However in Libya, if it wasn’t for the no fly zone implemented by the UN, Gaddafi most likely would have crushed the popular revolution in his country.

There are times when international pressure is unwelcome. This is one of the times it has been necessary. This has brought Moammar Gaddafi to the table to deal albeit he doesn’t seem ready to give up power just yet. Gaddafi wants to retain power through either himself or his sons with promise’s to start reform.

Gaddafi openly embraces the African Union peace plan while the Libyan rebels reject it. The plan calls for a cease fire and humanitarian aide but doesn’t mention removing Gaddafi from power. The Wall Street Journal published an article in which they claim that this was done as an attempt to grant some legitimacy to the Regime from small impoverished nations of Africa who are indebted to Gaddafi for bestowing gifts and bribes.

Libyan rebels main goal is to have Gaddafi and his sons removed they do not want to reform the current ruling system. They are seeking change; they want more access and control. They are unwilling to negotiate if Gaddafi and sons do not leave power. The State Department seems to be reflecting the will of the Libyan by calling for the removal of Gaddafi in accordance with the Rebels.

Like many of the revolts in the Middle East right now they as a people group want more say so over what happens to them locally and personally. Realistically how long can anyone take being dictated to and having the orders of the ruling party override their personal needs before getting feed up?

Gaddafi has sought to use the fact that Libya export light crude oil as a bargaining chip and claims Al Qaeda is behind the uprising. Fear mongering may work on a populace under the thumb of a dictator with a media black out. However when presented with the freedom of the press that a majority of the modern world experiences and seems to relish its hard to take some of these outlandish claims seriously.

Is there a means to a peaceful solution in Libya when neither party seems to agree on a peaceful end? Will we see an end to this stand off between Benghazi and Tripoli? Will Gaddafi go peacefully?
