Ta’anit Bechorim “The Fast of the Firstborn”
Tonight begins Ta’anit Bechorim “The Fast of the Firstborn.” This is a minor fast observed by firstborn males (firstborn to either mother or father) on the day before Passover. (Always on Nisan 14 “Erev Pesach” unless it is Shabbat then the fast falls on Nisan 13). The father of the firstborn son who is not yet Bar Mitzvah may fast in his son’s place.
This fast commemorates the fact that the firstborn of Jewish males were Passed over in Egypt during the final plague where the firstborn sons of the Egyptians were killed. (This 10th plague is know as Maccat Bechorot or “The Slaying of the firstborn.”
Now in some traditions, the obligation of fasting is so relaxed that the rabbis have said that participatation from the firstborn males in a siyum – a celebration marking the conclusion of the study in a book of the Talmud – alleviates the requirement to fast on this day.
