Friday is completely out the picture as I see it because that would only make Two days at max, its more like a day and a half. If he died on Thursday it would be a full three nights or evenings and Two and a Half days being that He rose literally “on” the third day (Matthew 12:40; Luke 24:7). This is why the disciples say “is this not the Third Day.” If it had been Friday it would have been mid-way through the Second day not the Third Day. If it had been Wednesday it would be on day Four when He rose. The Three nights and Three days we’re literal and that as it says it was still on the third day when He rose. Which can only be Thursday plus the fact that Nisan 15th is the first Shabbat of Pesach which was Friday. That year the Shabbat’s were back to back. Nisan 15th was Friday (the Shabbat of Matza) and Saturday was Nisan 16 (the weekly Shabbat). Yeshua rose on Nisan 17th and had died Nisan 14th. Yeshua would have entered Jerusalem on Friday Nisan 8th. If Yeshua entered on day before or after the time frame would have been different and would require breaking of Torah if it was on Saturday which was a Shabbat. Friday isn’t possible due to it would have been only 39 hours or so in the grave which isn’t 3 days it’s not even a full 2 days. If he died on Thursday at 3 pm and rose on Sunday around Sunrise it would have been at least 63 hours which is in the middle of third day. This lines up with what the disciples say. If it was Wednesday then it would have been on the fourth day at about 87 Hours. I’m thoroughly convinced it was Thursday and couldn’t have been Wednesday or Friday.
Let’s look at what would make Three Days if Yeshua died on Thursday
Partial Day: He died during the day on Thurs-day which is a small portion of a partial day, day one from 3pm to Sunset, is the first day. Then
Day One: Thursday evening is the first Full Eve. Fri-day Day is the First Full Day, the second Day from Thursday at 3pm.
Day Two: Friday evening is the second Full Eve. Satur-day is the second Full Day, and third Partial Day.
Day Three: Saturday evening the Third Eve. 2 1/4 days have pass by Saturday Eve. Yeshua had to raise before or around Sunday Morning to make it a full Three Days. Sun-day morning would have made the fourth partial day, and the third full day. This is why the disciples say “is this not the third day.”
The Timeline of Messiah’s Death Should Look As Follows.
Six Days before Pesach when John says Yeshua entered Jerusalem would have been Friday Nisan 8th. It could not have been on Saturday on Sabbath because Yeshua would have had all Jerusalem breaking Torah by having the people do things that a forbidden on Shabbat, (John 12:1; Matt 21:1; Mark 11:1, 8, Luke 19:28-29). Since Pesach fell on Nisan 14th would have been on Nisan 8th which would have been Friday when Yeshua entered Jerusalem according to Yochanan. Yochanan states that Yeshua entered Jerusalem six days before Pesach which is Nisan 14th. It was the day before Shabbat. Historically it is believed that Yeshua rose on Nisan 17th that is how this timeframe is calculated.
- Nisan 8th was Friday (which is six days before fourteen, just minus six from fourteen and you get eight)
- Nisan 9th was Saturday (which is Shabbat and everyone must rest)
- Nisan 10th was Sunday (the first day of the week)
- Nisan 11th was Monday
- Nisan 12th was Tuesday
- Nisan 13th was Wednesday
- Nisan 14th was Thursday (which is Erev Pesach from Wednesday Eve through Thursday, Yeshua’s Early Seder, the preparation day of our Passover Lamb, the sacrifice of the Korban Pesach-Paschal Lamb)
- Nisan 15th was Friday (which is the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the first day of the Feast is “a” Shabbat, a Holy Convocation, starting Thursday Eve is the night of the actual Seder and the High Sabbath)
- Nisan 16th was Saturday (which is the first day of the Count of Omer unless it falls on a Shabbat on that Exception is falls on Nisan 17h)
- Nisan 17th was First Fruits-The First Day of The Omer Count (when Yeshua rose from the dead on Sunday-Bikkurim, Motzei Shabbat, sometime after the Havdalah ceremony of the eve of Motzei Shabbat)
- Yeshua appeared for fourty days after Hus resurrection, (Acts 1:3).
- And then the Disciples would have kept the Count of the Omer until they received the Holy Spirit on Shavout.
“For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth,” (Matthew 12:40).“From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day,” (Matthew 16:21).“Saying, The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed and be raised up on the third day,” (Luke 9:22).“But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, it is the third day since these things happened,” (Luke 24:7).“God raised Him up on the third day and granted that He become visible,” (Acts 10:40).“And that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,” (1 Corinthians 15:4) .
When speaking of biblical days we know they start the evening before and end at Sunset the day of. When I state Thurs-”day” I’m referring to the day after the “eve” as the day. For example Erev Shabbat is Friday evening at sun down and Shabbat is Saturday until sundown. Because the difference in understanding of the day for us it can be confusing about when the day starts and ends. Our calendar and are different so it can become confusing to try to understand it due to the fact that our Western ways of thinking and communicating at times conflict with what the bible teaches. So let’s look at the break down of the time line of the Crucifixion to Resurrection.
Was there a missing day that we need to add as some assert? Did Yeshua rise on Nisan 17th or not? If Yeshua rose on Nisan 18th then He didn’t raise up on the Festival First Fruits which is Nisan 17th. Mark includes some errors and discrepancies including adding a fourth description to the Shema-V’ahvta when Matthew agree’s with Torah only listing three (to love your whole body, soul and strength) and also says “After the Sabbath” in contradiction to “Before the Sabbath.” We do not have the original transcripts written by the authors themselves and there are some discrepancies, when Matthew agree’s with Torah and Mark add’s a Hellenistic twist that disagree’s with Luke, Matthew, John and Torah I’m inclined to see the error as just that a translation error. Let’s look at the discrepancy in the narrative contextually.
There are major discrepancies between Mark, the other Gospels and Torah. For example both Mark and Luke record the same event one says Before the Sabbath the other says after. Do we add to the text or string together a copy and paste theology? Heaven forbid may it never be. They are not separate events just like there is no fourth dichotomy of the person in the Shema as Mark asserts. The transcript we have for Mark is a late addition that shows errors and corruptions that show a preference to Hellenism. When the difference disagree with Torah and the other Gospels the testimony of two or three other witnesses show them to be errors. We don’t change our theology due to error. There are whole passage of Mark shown to be inconsistent and full of error. For example Mark 16 is omitted from many bibles. When Mark disagree’s with Torah in reference to the Shema and the account in Matthew, Luke and John disagree, and complete portions of Mark are left out due to inaccuracies you can not build any solid theology on that.
Luke 23:56 states, “And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.” Whereas Mark 16:1 says, “And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the [mother] of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.” Would they do the same thing twice? Or is it According to Matthew 27:61 “And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.” Speaking of the same event Mark 15:46-47 states, “And he bought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre. And Mary Magdalene and Mary [the mother] of Joses beheld where he was laid.” Which is exactly what Mark is talking about. Luke 23:55 “And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.” They wouldn’t have anointed His body with oil twice. Their are discrepencies between the gospels with Mark being the lone stand out with errors that are obvious to the average reader.
It was necessary to hide Yeshua in the grave before sunset because it was the High Shabbat of HaMotzi. As John 19:31 says “The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and [that] they might be taken away.” The same day which is the day of Preparation when Yeshua was crucified they laid Him in the tomb. Before Sunset before darkness. John 19:42 “There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews’ preparation [day]; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.” If Yeshua was buried on Wednesday that would have been Nisan 13th since Yeshua rose on Motzei Shabbat (the First Day of the week) after Havdalah on Nisan 17th. If you say Wednesday was Nisan 14th then Sunday (Havdalah Saturday Evening) would have been Nisan 18th which would mean Yeshua didn’t rise on First Fruits. Havdalah is after sunset not before. For Yeshua to be hidden after Sunset on a High Shabbat would be breaking Torah. For Yeshua to raise before Sunset on Havdalah would be breaking torah. It is rightly understood that Yeshua rose after Havdalah Saturday and before Sunrise on Sunday. Yeshua wouldn’t have entered Jerusalem on Shabbat and He couldn’t die on Friday or Wednesday. The theological leaps needed to support that are extremely incongruent and illogical. Yeshua rose “on the third day” not the second or forth day. He rose sometime after Havdalah on Saturday before Sunrise on Sunday not before Havdalah on Saturday.
This is the only realistically possible timeline. A Friday Crucifixion would mean He rose on Monday. A Wednesday Crucifixion would have meant by 3pm Satur-day He would have had to rise from the dead. To me Thursday is the only logical and possible. The rest requires missing days and distorted timelines. I don’t like the idea of adding or subtracting days.
Nothing can be said can change the solid Thursday view of the crucifixion. Wednesday is out because Yeshua would have risen on the fourth day. Friday is out because He would have risen on the Second day not the Third Day and would have required Yeshua to cause all the Israeli’s and the Disciples to break the Sabaath when He entered the city. The Three Days and Three Nights to be is the foundation. Yeshua rising while it was still the Third Day is the crux of the text making Thursday the only logically possible day.
