The Eight Covenant’s Found In Scripture According To Scofields Reference Notes

The Rainbow set as the symbol of the Covenant ...

Did you know that there are eight Covenant’s laid out in scripture? Let’s do some personal study and take a look into Scofields Reference Notes on this topic as well. There are more than just Two Covenants so whenever someone wrongly states that it’s the Old Covenant Vs the New Covenant they misunderstand the intent, meaning and purpose of Covenant’s and scripture all together. Lets look at the covenants as scripture lays them out. Each covenant builds upon the other, there are at times modifications or amplifications. Did you know there are over 1050 Commandments in the Brit (New-Renewed) Chadasha (Covenant) as opposed to only 613 Commandments (Mitzvot) in the Tanakh. There are things that are clearly brought over to the Brit Chadasha including the Covenant of Salt, the Ten Words (also called Commandments) clearly are carried over (Exodus 20:2–17; Deuteronomy 5:6–21), and so are the cursing’s and blessings for obedience and curse’s that sin-disobedience brings laid out in Deuteronomy 28, the Festivals and Shabbats laid out Leviticus 23, as well as others.

The next time someone tries to go OT Vs. NT on you, challenge their knowledge of the Edenic Covenant, The Adamic Covenant, The Noachide Covenant, The Abrahamic Covenant, The Mosaic Covenant, The Palestinian Covenant, The Davidic Covenant and The New (Brit) Covenant (Chadasha). Any time someone challenges you on why you a believer in Yeshua find value in the OT send them home to do homework on the biblical covenants and how they all impact our salvation and the biblical narrative. Of course a good study into the Yeshua High Priestly Office after the Order of Melchizedek as well as the fulfillment of Sacrificial atonement in Yeshua’s blood are also should be topics of discussion.

Before we go into Scofields Notes on the eight covenants. Lets discuss the Halachic and Theological impact of each of the Eight Covenants in a brief synopsis as I see them:

  • The Edenic Covenant: they had the privilege of enjoying time walking with Adonai in the cool of the day, tend the garden, name the animals, and avoid the tree of knowledge of good AND EVIL. Basically you know G-d the perfect good avoid seeking out to know evil. Warning if personally know evil and hear the voice of fallen angels (demons) speak their knowledge to you will end in death and destruction. Adonai warned them. Why would they want something else when they had everything, perfect health, the tree of eternal life, perfect peace, a loving relationship with G-d? To have it all is to never have enough if your tempted by “the lust of your eyes”, “the lust of your flesh” or “the pride of life”. It’s important to not let the desires of your flesh or carnal nature. To not let the desires of your eyes to cause you to lust or covet. To not get so prideful that you have it so good with Adonai in your own garden and look down upon G-ds laws or creation. Adonai had to slay an animal to provide coverings for their naked bodies.
  • The Adamic Covenant: in essence man had to work hard, to toil to eat and the ground would be cursed, women would have labor pains and serve her husband, The Seed of woman would bruise the Serpents head and child birthing would become painful, and The Seed of woman would bruise the Serpents head. The Serpent (Dragon-Dinosaur) was cursed to slither on its belly, thus all dinosaurs lost the ability to walk upright and were supposedly able to speak telepathically to people (according to ancient mythology), I’m not sure about that one. Thus Alligators, Lizards, Snakes, etcetera… all have either feet to the side and all slide and slither on their bellies. Adam and Eve’s ultimate punishment was death and banishment from the Garden. All they had was one command in the Edenic Covenant to not eat of the Tree of Knowledge of good AND EVIL. Satan tempted them by saying “don’t you know you will become like gods,” the temptation was to be like fallen angel who called themselves gods and in fact were not. The stories of the fallen angels became the mystery religions of the world. This is why they carry similar theme’s because they were speaking to fallen beings. They knew G-d the ultimate good, from being enticed and tempted to have intimate and personal knowledge (or gnosis) of evil and be likes the so called “gods.” Satan’s evil kingdom gained access to speak to humankind in an inner voice that they try to disguise as the voice of the victim, much like CS Lewis’s “Screw-tape Letters” illustrates. Spirit beings speak to us on a spiritual level, also known as the Theta level. They gained access to Satan’s kingdom and were enable to hear them speak and learn.
  • The Noachide Covenant: Adonai provides a rainbow as a promise to never destroy the earth in a worldwide flood again. Having already destroyed the dinosaurs in the Ice Age, then man mingled with demons-fallen angels that lead up to the Noach Flood. G-d promised to not use a flood to destroy man again. Instead the earth with be consumed in fire and there will be a new heavens and a new earth after judgment to-day. Adonai has frozen the earth in a global ice age and as subsequent flood, earth has suffered twice for rebellion. The Noachid Covenant guarantees seed time and harvest time as promise to both good and evil. The Adamic Covenant of main toiling to provide for his family is confirmed, you must still labor hard and birth pain will be great. Ham the father of Kena’an was cursed because he saw his fathers nakedness and mocked him to his brothers. Shem and Yefet put a cloak over their shoulder and walked in backwards and covered their fathers nakedness. Because of this when Noach awoke and knew what his youngest son had done he cursed his grandson Kena’an to be a servant of servants to his brothers. The he blessed Shem, praised ADONAI, the G-d of Shem, basically promising a special relationship with Adonai. And he asked that Elohim would enlarge Yafets, that he may live in the tents of Shem, and that Ham son Kena’an would serve them. The Noachide Laws are bind upon all “children of noah” (all of mankind) and non-jew who lives according to these laws is regarded as a Tzadakim (Righteous) Gentile and is assured a place in Olam Haba (the World to Come). Followers of the Noachide Laws are called “B’nei Noach.” We all descend from Adam and Noah. The Seven Noachide Laws include prohibition against Idolatry, Blasphemy, Murder, Theft, Sexual Immorality, to establish just courts-judges and to not eat flesh taken from an animal while its still alive. You can see this reflected in the Bet Din in Jerusalems rulings by James and the other elders, that Gentiles should abstain from things polluted by idols, from fornication, from meat that has been strangled and to avoid blood (Acts 15:19-29).
  • The Avrahamic Covenant: is a rather interesting and complex one, Adonai promised to make Avram a great nation and father of many nations, He promised to bless those who bless him and curse those who curse him, and He promised that through his Seed, (Messiah), that he would be blessed the families of the earth.  Avraham brought an offering to Melchizedek, who was most likely Shem, Avram’s great-uncle according to Rabbinic tradition. He brought a tithe of spoils or increase, and partook of bread (haMotzi) and wine (Borae Pre Hagafen).
  • The Mosaic Covenant: Given at Sanai, and throughout the wilderness. G-d gave him the “ten words” that is summed up in the V’ahvta and by Yeshua as the right way to love ELOHIM, love your neighbor and to love yourself. Adonai desired that all Israel would be prophets and that He could speak to us face to face as He did with Moshe. The people we’re afraid and said no Moshe go for us. So Adonai gave a priestly class from the tribe of Levi, instituted sacrificial atonement, had them built a tabernacle and gave them a Bet Din (House of Judges later to be called the Synagogue) made up of 70 elders just as Yeshua called 70 elders in addition to His twelve Apostles. This was a time of Torah-Instruction-Law, Priestly Sacrificial Atonement and Righteous Judges. We in Messiah are grafted into father Avraham through the Seed of David and Avraham, Yeshua. Making us heirs of the promise to Avraham and Yehudah, since the blood of our Messiah is of the tribe of Yehudah. Scripture says there was to be one law for the natural-born and for the sojourner as well. A mixed multitude of Mitzrayim and others joined them in the desert. We join Yeshua, the tribe of Jesse, Judah, David, Israel and Avraham through Moshiach.
  • The Palestinian Covenant: is a promise to the  people of Israel, it is a conditional land covenant that Yisrael never kept. They didn’t keep the Year of Jubilee and many times went back to serving ba’al and other gods. They didn’t remove the pagan worshipers of demons who sought to interbreed with fallen angels and worship these demons. They got removed from the land twice they were taken captive, as scripture says if they don’t keep their part of the covenant the land will “vomit them up.” G-d promised to be with them in captivity and eventually they would return. They never fully possessed the land and didn’t eradication the Canaanites, Rephiam (an ancient “race” of giant descendants of the Nephilim whose speech was like a buzzing, rumble or murmur), Nephilim (offspring of the B’nei Elohim-Fallen Angel and Daughters of me) and Anakim (Prideful Ones who we’re mixed race descendants of the Rephaim-Nephilim, connected to the Sumerian gods Enki and the Anunaki) from the land as G-d had commanded. So they suffered many trials and persecutions. The two kingdoms divided into Israel and Judah. In the end only Judah remained. And some of the Tribe of Levi, Ephraim and Manasseh hide among the people near Mount Mariah where Adonai first gave Moshe the revelation. They worshipped there instead of Yerushaliyim.
  • The Davidic Covenant: Adonai promised to keep a person on the throne forever from the house of David would rule over the kingdom. Adonai true to His word kept the tribe of Judah of which David was a member and Messiah’s lineage came through Judah through his actual mother and official adopted father. It was important in Jewish tradition that the adoptive father be of “kosher” or “righ-just” stock. Both Yeshua’s adoptive father and birth mother where of the tribe of Judah we see each of their lineages in scripture. Now Yeshua sits on the throne forever as a king and priest after the Order of Melchizedek.
  • The New (Brit) Covenant (Chadasha): writing the Law-Torah-Instruction of Adonai upon our hearts, so that we may no longer be sinners, foreigners or sojourners, that we may join the house of Avraham as a joint heir, a royal nation and a holy priesthood under Yeshua, according to the Order of Melchizedek. The Renewed Covenant, is the writing of the Torah-Instruction upon our hearts, we are not saved by works but by grace through living faith, we are however predestined for good works. If we love Adonai we obey His commands. We must go and sin no more for Adonai desires obedience not sacrifice (or repentance). G-d is not willing that any should perish but wants all to come to repentance. Which means we must turn from our sinful goyish ways and take on the ways of the people of Adonai. We are to live according to the Torah and Gospels, the Prophets and the Epistles. Yeshua sealed the Brit Chadasha in His blood and the Paraklete (Ruach HaKodesh) tore the dividing partition (the Parakete) in the Holy of Holies giving us access to boldly come before the thrown of Adonai and seek his mercy, grace and there behold the beauty of His Face (His presence). Yeshua said that He would tear down the temple and rebuild it in three days, speaking of His body as a temple. Our bodies are mini-temples of Yeshua, we are the body of Yeshua and should allow His Glory to dwell in us richly. Remember works account as debt, however obedience is an act of love that seeks not its own but seeks to fulfill the love and relationship to another. Every relationship has responsibilities, communication, caring, compassion, helping, serving, speaking, listening, etcetera… Everyone wants to talk about being a friend of G-d but doesn’t do what the people in the bible who Adonai called Friends did. We must endure to the end to be saved. The right-just cry out and He answers. To as many as call upon His name He gives the right to become children of G-d by adopting them into the household of Avraham and the commonwealth of Judah. We are joint heirs of the promises and power demonstrated through Messiah who was born of a virgin, did miracles, ministered, was crucified, died, and rose on the third day. We have the Law-Instruction and Torah in our hearts. If we walk in the Spirit and do not walk in the Carnal lusts of the flesh that oppose the Ruach HaKodeshm who will keep us and remind us of the D’var Adonai (Word of the L-rd), then we will obey the law because its written on our inward parts and we desire to out of love. This is why many Charismatics, Pentecostals and Intercessors who pray for Israel feel a call to Messianic Judaism and Messianic Ministry, even if its simple curiosity, when Passover and Pentecost role around they desire to know more and go deeper. We must offer those avenues for discipleship. Yeshua did away with sacrificial atonement and became our High Priest, after the Order of Melchizedek. The Sabbath and Festivals remain Holy Convocations to Adonai forever. Motzei Shabbat, the Eve after Shabbat, Eve of the First Day of the Week is traditional to gather, fellowship and observe Havdallah then end of the Shabbat and bringing in the new week ceremony.

Here are the covenants according to Scofields Reference Notes:

The Edenic Covenant the first of the eight great covenants of Scripture which condition life and salvation, and about which all Scripture crystallizes, has seven elements. The man and woman in Eden were responsible:

  1. To replenish the earth with a new order–man;
  2. to subdue the earth to human uses;
  3. to have dominion over the animal creation;
  4. to eat herbs and fruits;
  5. to till and keep the garden;
  6. to abstain from eating of the tree of knowledge of good and evil;
  7. the penalty–death.

The Adamic Covenant conditions the life of fallen man–conditions which must remain till, in the kingdom age, “the creation also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the sons of God” Romans 8:21. The elements of the Adamic Covenant are:

  1. The serpent, Satan’s tool, is cursed (Genesis 3:14), and becomes God’s illustration in nature of the effects of sin–from the most beautiful and subtle of creatures to a loathsome reptile! The deepest mystery of the atonement is intimated here. Christ, “made sin for us,” in bearing our judgment, is typified by the brazen serpent ; Numbers 21:5-9; John 3:14; 2 Corinthians 5:21. Brass speaks of judgment–in the brazen altar, of God’s judgment, and in the laver, of self-judgment.
  2. The first promise of a Redeemer (Genesis 3:15). Here begins the “Highway of the Seed,” Abel, Seth, Noah Genesis 6:8-10, Shem Gen 9:26; Gen 9:27 Abraham Genesis 12:1-4, Isaac Genesis 17:19-21 Jacob Genesis 28:10-14, Judah Genesis 49:10, David 2 Samuel 7:5-17 Immanuel-Christ ; Isaiah 7:9-14; Matt 1:1; Matt 1:20-23; 1 John 3:8; John 12:31.
  3. The changed state of the woman (Genesis 3:16). In three particulars:
    (a) Multiplied conception; (b) motherhood linked with sorrow; (c) the headship of the man (cf) Gen 1:26; Gen 1:27 The entrance of sin, which is disorder, makes necessary a headship, and it is vested in man ; 1 Timothy 2:11-14; Ephesians 5:22-25; 1 Corinthians 11:7-9.
  4. The earth cursed (Genesis 3:17) for man’s sake. It is better for fallen man to battle with a reluctant earth than to live without toil.
  5. The inevitable sorrow of life (Genesis 3:17).
  6. The light occupation of Eden Genesis 2:15 changed to burdensome labour Gen 3:18; Gen 3:19.
  7. Physical death Genesis 3:19; Romans 5:12-21, See “Death (spiritual)” Genesis 2:17. (See Scofield “Ephesians 2:5″) .

The Noahic Covenant. The elements are:

  1. The relation of man to the earth under the Adamic Covenant is confirmed (See Scofield “Genesis 8:21″)
  2. The order of nature is confirmed (Genesis 8:22)
  3. Human government is established (Genesis 9:1-6)
  4. Earth is secured against another universal judgment by water Genesis 8:21; 9:11
  5. A prophetic declaration is made that from Ham will descend an inferior and servile posterity Gen 9:24; Gen 9:25.
  6. A prophetic declaration is made that Shem will have a peculiar relation to Jehovah Gen 9:26; Gen 9:27. All divine revelation is through Semitic men, and Christ, after the flesh, descends from Shem.
  7. A prophetic declaration is made that from Japheth will descend the “enlarged” races Genesis 9:27. Government, science, and art, speaking broadly, are and have been Japhetic, so that history is the indisputable record of the exact fulfilment of these declarations.

The Abrahamic Covenant as formed Genesis 12:1-4 and confirmed ; Genesis 13:14-17; 15:1-7 17:1-8 is in seven distinct parts:

  1. “I will make of thee a great nation.” Fulfilled in a threefold way:
    (a) In a natural posterity–”as the dust of the earth Genesis 13:16; John 8:37, viz. the Hebrew people.
    (b) In a spiritual posterity–”look now toward heaven . . . so shall thy seed be” John 8:39; Rom 4:16; Rom 4:17; Rom 9:7; Rom 9:8; Gal 3:6; Gal 3:7; Gal 3:29 viz. all men of faith, whether Jew or Gentile.
    (c) fulfilled also through Ishmael Genesis 17:18-20
  2. “I will bless thee.” Fulfilled in two ways:
    (a) temporally Gen 13:14; Gen 13:15; Gen 13:17; 15:18; Gen 24:34; Gen 24:35 (b) spiritually ; Genesis 15:6; John 8:56
  3. “And make thy name great.” Abraham’s is one of the universal names.
  4. “And thou shalt be a blessing” Gal 3:13; Gal 3:14
  5. “I will bless them that bless thee.” In fulfilment closely related to the next clause.
  6. “And curse him that curseth thee.” Wonderfully fulfilled in the history of the dispersion. It has invariably fared ill with the people who have persecuted the Jew–well with those who have protected him. The future will still more remarkably prove this principle Deuteronomy 30:7; Isaiah 14:1,; Joel 3:1-8; Micah 5:7-9; Haggai 2:22; Zechariah 14:1-3; Matt 25:40; Matt 25:45.
  7. “In thee shall all the families of the earth be blessed.” This is the great evangelic promise fulfilled in Abraham’s Seed, Christ Galatians 3:16; John 8:56-58.
    It brings into greater definiteness the promise of the Adamic Covenant concerning the Seed of the woman Genesis 3:15
    NOTE.–The gift of the land is modified by prophecies of three dispossessions and restorations Gen 15:13; Gen 15:14; Gen 15:16; Jer 25:11; Jer 25:12; Deuteronomy 28:62-65; 30:1-3. Two dispossessions and restorations have been accomplished. Israel is now in the third dispersion, from which she will be restored at the return of the Lord as King under the Davidic Covenant ; Deuteronomy 30:3; Jeremiah 23:5-8; Ezekiel 37:21-25; Luke 1:30-33; Acts 15:14-17

The Mosaic Covenant,

  1. given to Israel
  2. in three divisions, each essential to the others, and together forming the Mosaic Covenant, viz.: the Commandments, expressing the righteous will of God Exodus 20:1-26 the “judgments,” governing the social life of Israel ; Exodus 21:1-; 24:11 and the “ordinances,” governing the religious life of Israel ; Exodus 24:12-; 31:18. These three elements form “the law,” as that phrase is generically used in the New Testament (e.g.) Matt 5:17; Matt 5:18. The Commandments and the ordinances formed one religious system. The Commandments were a “ministry of condemnation” and of “death” 2 Corinthians 3:7-9 the ordinances gave, in the high priest, a representative of the people with Jehovah; and in the sacrifices a “cover” (see “Atonement,” (See Scofield “Leviticus 16:6″) for their sins in anticipation of the Cross ; Hebrews 5:1-3; 9:6-9; Rom 3:25; Rom 3:26. The Christian is not under the conditional Mosaic Covenant of works, the law, but under the unconditional New Covenant of grace. ; Romans 3:21-27; Rom 6:14; Rom 6:15; Galatians 2:16; Gal 3:10-14; Gal 3:16-18; Gal 3:24-26; 4:21-31; Hebrews 10:11-17.

The Palestinian Covenant gives the conditions under which Israel entered the land of promise. It is important to see that the nation has never as yet taken the land under the unconditional Abrahamic Covenant, nor has it ever possessed the whole land (cf. Genesis 15:18; Numbers 34:1-12. The Palestinian Covenant is in seven parts.

  1. Dispersion for disobedience, Deuteronomy 30:1; 28:63-68 (See Scofield “Genesis 15:18″)
  2. The future repentance of Israel while in the dispersion, Deuteronomy 30:2.
  3. The return of the Lord, Deuteronomy 30:3; Amos 9:9-14; Acts 15:14-17.
  4. Restoration to the land, Deuteronomy 30:5; Isa 11:11; Isa 11:12; Jeremiah 23:3-8; Ezekiel 37:21-25
  5. National conversion, Deuteronomy 30:6; Rom 11:26; Rom 11:27; Hosea 2:14-16
  6. The judgment of Israel’s oppressors, Deuteronomy 30:7; Isa 14:1; Isa 14:2; Joel 3:1-8; Matthew 25:31-46
  7. National prosperity, Deuteronomy 30:9; Amos 9:11-14
    For Another Point of View: See Topic 301242

The Davidic Covenant 2 Samuel 7:8-17. This covenant, upon which the glorious kingdom of Christ “of the seed of David according to the flesh” is to be founded, secures:

  1. A Davidic “house”; i.e. posterity, family
  2. A “throne”; i.e. royal authority
  3. A kingdom; i.e. sphere of rule
  4. In perpetuity; “for ever”
  5. And this fourfold covenant has but one condition: disobedience in the Davidic family is to be visited with chastisement; but not to the abrogation of the covenant 2 Samuel 7:15; Psalms 89:20-37; Isaiah 24:5; 54:3.
    The chastisement fell; first in the division of the kingdom under Rehoboam, and, finally, in the captivities. 2 Kings 25:1-7. Since that time but one King of the Davidic family has been crowned at Jerusalem and He was crowned with thorns. But the Davidic Covenant confirmed to David by the oath of Jehovah, and renewed to Mary by the angel Gabriel, is immutable Psalms 89:30-37 and the Lord God will yet give to that thorn-crowned One “the throne of his father David.” ; Luke 1:31-33; Acts 2:29-32; 15:14-17.

The New Covenant, Summary:

  1. “Better” than the Mosaic covenant not morally, but efficaciously Hebrews 7:19; Rom 8:3; Rom 8:4.
  2. Established on “better” (i.e. unconditional) promises. In the Mosaic Covenant God said, “If ye will” Exodus 19:5, in the New Covenant He says, “I will” Heb 8:10; Heb 8:12.
  3. Under the Mosaic Covenant obedience sprang from fear Hebrews 2:2; 12:25-27 under the New from a willing heart and mind Hebrews 8:10.
  4. The New Covenant secures the personal revelation of the Lord to every believer Hebrews 8:11.
  5. the complete oblivion of sins Hebrews 8:12; 10:17; 10:3.
  6. rests upon an accomplished redemption Matt 26:27; Matt 26:28; 1 Corinthians 11:25; Heb 9:11; Heb 9:12; Heb 9:18 23.
  7. and secures the perpetuity, future conversion, and blessing of Israel. Jeremiah 31:31-40. See also “Kingdom (O.T.),” and 2 Samuel 7:8-17.
    The New Covenant is the eighth, thus speaking of resurrection and of eternal completeness.

Yeshua’s Relationship To The Eight Covenants

II. The relation of Christ to the eight covenants is as follows:

  1. To the Edenic Covenant, Christ, as the “second Man,” the “last Adam” 1 Corinthians 15:45-47 takes the place over all things which the first Adam lost ; Colossians 2:10; Hebrews 2:7-8.
  2. He is the “Seed of the woman” of the Adamic Covenant Genesis 3:15; John 12:31; 1 John 3:8; Galatians 4:4; Revelation 20:10 and fulfilled its conditions of toil Mark 6:3 and obedience.
  3. As the greatest son of Shem, in Him was fulfilled supremely the promise to Shem in the Noahic Covenant. (See Scofield “Genesis 9:1″) Colossians 2:9.
  4. He is the “Seed to whom the promises were made” in the Abrahamic Covenant; the son of Abraham obedient unto death Genesis 22:18; Galatians 3:16; Philippians 2:8.
  5. He lived sinlessly under the Mosaic covenant and bore for us its curse. Galatians 3:10-13.
  6. He lived obediently as a Jew in the land under the Palestinian Covenant, and will yet perform it gracious promises Deuteronomy 28:1-30:9.
  7. He is the “Seed,” “Heir,” and “King” under the Davidic Covenant Matthew 1:1; Luke 1:31-33.
  8. His sacrifice is the foundation of the New Covenant Matthew 26:28; 1 Corinthians 11:25.
