Album Review: Jekob (of Washington Projects) – Pocketless Souls

After reviewing Jekob’s ”Minor Setbacks For Major Comeups”, I was a instant Jekob’s fan. I felt as though, it was one of the best projects that I  reviewed this year. So, I was excited to get his new project, ”Pocketless Souls”. This project is inspired by a poem that Jekob discovered (which happens to be the intro to the album). The theme of the poem discusses trye “wealth” from spiritual things and not materalistic things of the world. Let’s see if this theme shines throughout the album.

FALLING STARS- Jekob starts off the project ”shining” with “Falling Stars”. Comparing people to stars and explaining on some of us are just “floating” is genius. The second verse is great. He gets real personal and shows the listeners that he is human. One of my favorite bars is “I woke up repenting/from a full day of venting”. Who hasn’t had one of those days? He also speaks on how God knows all the hairs on his head-even the one’s he pulls out from stressing!  Nice Guy Beats helped make a classic banger with Jekob. This is a REPEAT OFFENDER!

FAR AWAY (FEATURING APPLEJAXX & BELEAF FROM THE BREAX)- It’s good to hear certified christian artists speaking on how sometimes they feel “Far Away” from God at times. Jekob always shines on Kajmir Royale  Applejaxx’s verse was real-I’m still paying off my student loans too. Beleaf also brought his A game. I also feel him with the “Your the sun, I’m pluto” bar. This track truly shocks the world like lightining! This is a REPEAT OFFENDER!

NEVER BE THE SAME (FEATURING REL PAUL)- This track has good single appeal. Jekob sounds good on this Saints Beatz track. I was feeling when he went into that “back in the day” flow from the first verse. He does a great job on the hook and really puts the icing on the track. Rel Paul also had a good verse. This is my first time hearing him and he had me at his first two bars. This is a hot track.

UP UP AND AWAY (FEATURING CONSCIENCE)- Trix Music Production confused me (in a good way) with where this beat was going once it kicked in. Tracks like this, is why I like Jekob.  Jekob has a style that can go with any type of track. Conscience also cruises on this track. Jekob’s second verse is maybe the best verse on the project. So, if you aren’t feeling the techno feel, at least fast foward to the last verse. If not, your missing a treat.

EVERYTHING- DJ Cones and Jekob together is like 9th wonder and phonte together…classic hip hop. Hands down….this is the best track on the project. Not one bar comes weak or fake and filler. Can’t speak on this track other than saying…This is a REPEAT OFFENDER!

OLD SELF (FEATURING CONSCIENCE)- Coming off the heels of “Everything”, Jekob stays in the same vein and murders this track. I love when he speaks on the demons on your shoulder. Conscience also brings it and had me rewinding on his “robbing his memory bank” bar. This is a REPEAT OFFENDER!

WALKING ON A DREAM (WITH EMPIRE OF THE SUN)- This is also another reason why I love Jekob. He will shift gears on you in a minute. This track is so mellow. I  could truly ride to this track all night long. This is where he transends beyond a rapper and unto a artist. This is a REPEAT OFFENDER!

COME A LONG WAY (FEATURING CONSCIENCE)- I love how Jekob continues to stay with the “pocketless souls” theme and continues speaks on how money isn’t everything. Once again, Conscience and Jekob go well together. They really balance each other out. When listening to them together on a track, they give off a “The Breax” feel. We need more songs that show how much we’ve come from and not just focus on where we are right now. Sometimes, that reminder helps you appericate where you are.

PUSHING ME (WITH COLDPLAY)- First off, when I saw that Coldplay was on this track…I was very instrested in what Jekob was going to do with it. Jekob picked the best part of “Amsterdam” to sample and really shines with this banger. He speaks on social issues of poverty and our pride.  Jekob’s second verse about battling time is so powerful. I could truly see this track as a video as wel as a commerical radio single. It’s songs like this that make Jekob a artist that should be mentioned with the best. This is a REPEAT OFFENDER!

SEVENTY FIVE DEEP- When Jekob speaks to the haters, I love it! He doesn’t diss, he simply speaks the truth and educates them. He speaks on how certain “chruch folk” don’t want to ruffle feathers of people outside of the church, but show knuckles to people inside it. He doesn’t mind having a ”Judas” tag given by the “church people” who judge his music. If you try to hate on this track…your a hour past late! This is a REPEAT OFFENDER!

CAN’T STOP ME-On this track, Jekob is “aiming at our hearts without no chrome”. He speaks on how he’s reaching the top and no one can stop him. The scary thing on this track is that he says that “this isn’t half of the best of him”, so just think how much better the next album is going to be?

Overall, I give this album 4.5. Jekob never makes less than classic and quality tracks, even when he isn’t being serious. The production is great. However, some of these tracks repeating the tag lines throughout the song can get annoying. As I spoke on the last review, I compared Jekob to Drake. On this album, he clearly surpasses Drake’s social content, yet he keeps that fun and confident sound that Drake has. On the flip side, I wish I could have heard more of Jekob singing. He teases the fans by just singing on the hooks with this album.  Once again, Jekob really stepped his bars up lyrically. He continued to stay on the ”pocketless souls” theme and reached places that most christian artists are afraid to even travel to. Jekob is truly hip hop and beyond. This album is a classic on all aspects and should be something to put into your pocket. Spread the soup.
