While at the Blog World & New Media Expo I got a chance to sit down with the founder of and CEO of Corp.Net Nellie Akalp. Nellie is a regular contributor to Mashable, AllBusiness and Small Business Trends. We made an opportunity to discuss the idea’s reason and advice she had for New Media specialists, how she believes that companies like hers can help New Media entrepreneurs, why she felt it important to be at BlogWorld and why New Media specialist should incorporate their blogging-business entity. Her impassioned plea was:
“The reason that Bloggers and Writers should take their business seriously exposed to liability.” – Nellie Akalp
She made the point that if you incorporate you protect your personal assets from litigation and liability if you ever came across a situation in which your or your message put you in a hot position or liability you won’t have to leverage or use your personal assets to save you assets. Sometimes our stances and positions can get us in hot water with those who oppose or may be offended by the messages we present or promote. If you cross the lines and fall into a legal situation its good to have protections for your person and family.
With the recent FCC filing concerning disclosing who may be your sponsors or pay you for content. If that is an issue for you then you may seriously want to consider incorporating to protect your rights and content. Companies like CorpNet help you set up your corporation easily and readily. They have someone file the paperwork for you saving yourself trouble of having to study investigate or do it yourself. There are entities out there like “New Media Rights” that offer free legal help in the case you do find yourself in a situation where you receive a Cease and Desist order. For those who want to be protected from personal liability the idea of incorporating through a company like CorpNet. If your looking to copyright your personal content there a ways to do that. Personally I use “My Free Copyright” to protect my original content.
Companies like CorpNet help you incorporate using easy business filing and sign up for your start up business. The also help maintain your business status and file all paperwork for you, help set up DBA-Fictitious Business Names, provide compliance, incorporation, sole proprietorship and help you acquire a state tax ID. You can easily set up an LLC and provide information on the Members, Principals, and Manager. For Corporations you can easily file in the information to provide for the Chairman, President and Secretary. Its easy and quick, once you fill out the one page order form and then sit back and let them do the work for you. You save time and protect your business.
Again, a Corporation, LLC or Sole Proprietorship protects you against personal loss. Investing in incorporation is an investment into your business that’s worth it. As Rick Calvert states the goals of the BlogWorld and New Media Expo is to help content providers “create, distribute and monetize.” If your goal is to monetize this is something you should consider, Incorporation! And in time for CyberMonday they are offering savings that may make it easier and cheaper for you those bargain hunters who don’t have a huge budget or like to save.
